Children's Vision
Children spend a lot of time in recreational activities that require good vision. Whether it's team sports or just playing in the backyard, it's not as much fun if they can't see well.
- The National Parent Teacher Association reports an estimated 10 million children suffer from vision problems.
- 10 percent of preschoolers have vision deficiencies.
- One out of every four students in grades K through 6 has vision deficiencies.
- 60 percent of student identified as problem learners have undetected vision problems.
The American Optometric Association encourages parents to have their child's eyes examined at no later than 6 months old, at age 3, and then again just before starting school. School-age children need an exam every year even if they seem to have no visual problems.
According to the National Center for Health Statistics, only 14 percent of American children under age 5 have received a comprehensive eye exam. A comprehensive eye examination can only be performed by an eye doctor and is not the same as a vision screening.
